Straight Lesbians / Straightbians

Whilst the terms straight and lesbian do contradict one another, that doesn't mean that there isn't a way for someone to identify validly as both! A straightbian or straight lesbian, sometimes also called lesbihet, is someone who identifies as both straight and lesbian. Since this definition is really broad and not super descriptive, it means there are lots of ways in which this can happen, not just one specific one!

Some ways that someone can identify as a straightbian include:

! being a multigender or genderfluid lesbian and labelling your men-loving-women attraction as straight
! having split attraction (being sexually attracted to women/non-men and romantically attracted to the opposite gender, etc)
! being homosexual heteroromantic, heterosexual homoromantic, or otherwise
! being duosexual / switching between two sexualities
! being androgyne, or another gender that is both masculine and feminine, male and female-aligned, or similar, and therefore being connected to being both straight and lesbian

There are also the terms straightcian / straight vincian, straytbian / strayt lesbian, and straytcian / strayt vincian! Straightcian refers to the same experience, but with being both straight and vincian. Straytbians and straytcians are folks who identify as both lesbian/vincian and strayt (straight in a uniquely non-binary way). These terms are far less talked about - it seems as if way too much discourse over terms gets taken to the lesbian side of things - but they're all still as valid as straight lesbians!

👻. I use the term straight lesbian personally because I'm pangender and pangenderflux! For me, this means I identify as all genders within my culture and they fluctuate. Sometimes I feel a man-aligned gender more strongly, and at these times I feel dysphoric identifying as a lesbian and use straight! Since that male or male-aligned gender is always there, there's always a tiny part of me that feels as if it's more right to identify as straight, so I identify as both straight and lesbian

📜. I am a part of a system and identify as a straightbian because the body's gender dysphoria translates to all fronters. Even though I'm xenine and woman-aligned in the headspace, I'm man-aligned when fronting, making me simultaneously gay and straight

🌶️. I identify personally as a straytbian but my experience is really similar to that of a straightbian, only that my straightness feels more from a non-binary perspective. I'm bigender and shift between feeling like an azurgirl and a demiboy, so I always feel a connection to masculinity either way and straytness is always something I feel in the background of things. When I'm feeling even more like a demiboy, I identify as strayt, when I'm feeling more like an azurgirl, I identify as lesbian, when I feel like a mix, I am both. A straytbian.

Why don't straightbians just identify as heterosexual homoromantic or vies versa?

First, it's good to note that lesbian does not always equal homosexual! Lesbian can be used to refer to lots of different types of attraction, not just sexual (hence the existence of split attraction m-spec lesbians and ace/aro/aroace lesbians) and not all lesbian attraction is for the same or similar genders (hence the existence of non-woman lesbians and lesboys). This means that someone using the term homosexual, homoromantic, or otherwise, may not hold the same meaning to them as lesbian does!

As well as this, being hetero- and homo- is a way of identifying as a straightbian anyway if this does suit an individual, it's just quicker to use this term! But straightbians shouldn't be forced to use this form of split attraction, if they don't want to!

Are straight lesbians LGBTQ+?

It's in the name! Lesbian! Straight lesbians still experience non-straight attraction, just like how pansexuals for example, and others, still experience non-straight attraction whilst also experiencing heterosexual attraction

Can straightbians be lesboys? Can they be m-spec lesbians?

Since a lesboy is (very basically) anyone who identifies with the word 'boy' and is a lesbian, then yes! Straight lesbians are still lesbians or at least partially/sometimes lesbians in some cases. Because of this, they can also be m-spec lesbians! For example, being straightbian and biromantic due to being multigender and having split attraction

Can straightbians say the d slu-

Shush!!! Not everything is about slurs, not everyone wants to say slurs, and nobody can properly dictate who can or can't say a slur when it comes to an identity like this! I can't put my foot down with a yes or no because everyone's idea of who can say what slur is different, so it's really all up to making sure you're not using it with bad intent, and making sure you're at least in the generally accepted area of people who can say it

But lesbians aren't attracted to men, so straight lesbians can't exist

As explained before, lesbian doesn't specify attraction type, and it's very open to interpretation with many definitions. Not all of these definitions will state that a lesbian can never be attracted to men genuinely. Historical interpretations, for example, are a huge reason for m-spec lesbians existing - and they are attracted to men in most cases. The way someone interprets a term is their own experience, and as long as it is staying true to the term, it's a valid interpretation!

In the end, how somebody identifies doesn't concern anyone else unless it is actively hurting someone! The existence of this identity does not hurt the lesbian or straight communities and there are valid reasons as to why they exist. Terms can also be interpreted in so many ways and invalidating a perfectly backed-up interpretation of a term that has so many (lesbian) is never going to get anywhere!
